Natalie Lynn Lichtenbert Interview

Natalie Lynn is a personal trainer and fitness model. We caught up with her to get her thoughts on fitness, health, and fitness modeling.

Natalie, you’re an accomplished fitness model and fitness professional, can you tell us how you decided on this career path?

I’ve always loved modeling…and my Mom had me sitting on her feet while she did sit ups when I was like two…so it’s just been a lifelong thing! I have vintage magazines with Christie Brinkley, Cameron Diaz, etc. Those were the days!

Are you more focused on the modeling or personal training side of things right now?

I’m always more focused on the modeling side of things. It is my passion. I am also a Laboratory Scientist specializing in Viruses and Molecular Pathology. Personal Training is my third job. I love seeing people making positive changes in their lives and it’s a part of my life I cannot live without.

Are you taking new clients?

Yes

Many of our visitors ask about the best way to get started on a fitness routine. Do you have any advice?

It has to be a part of your daily routine, scheduled and not a maybe thing. I schedule my life around my workouts unless I absolutely can’t. I find it is extremely better for me to fit my workout in first thing in the morning before I start the rest of my day. I am fresh with energy then, and leave ready to conquer and create the day.

What do you feel is more important, diet or the actual workout?

Diet always comes first! Working out enhances a healthy lifestyle.

Do you recommend that your clients take any supplements? Protein shakes? Creatine? Or just healthy eating and lots of water?

I only recommend healthy, clean eating that is all natural, whole and pure. These low fat and low carb products wreak havoc with our systems yet people get so sold on them. They are really not healthy for you. Eating smaller, more frequent clean meals will leave you feeling great!

Fittron recently attended a fitness modeling casting even here in New York. One of the professionals on the site invited us and we spoke with a number of aspiring models and industry veterans. Do you have any advice for them? Can they make a good living as a fitness model?

LOL. You can make better money as a fitness model if you are willing to go beyond print work which pays little. Infomercials, voiceovers, stunt modeling, etc. are better ways to pay the bills!

What type of fitness modeling work are you focusing on now? Are you repping any products?

I’ve been doing a bunch of stuff including commercial/print and advertising. I’m repping Biopharm Nutrition currently amongst other products.

Are you doing any fitness competitions in the near future?

I have a line up of shows that I am doing…both local and national…can’t wait!

Generally, how long should a person work out for?

However long you can handle to get it done…but definitely I would say no longer than 2 hours in the gym!

How many times a week do you work out now?

I do SOMETHING everyday…it’s just a part of my everyday routine.

Do you have a strict diet? Any cheat foods?

I do have a strict diet. My cheat food would be fat free cheese. It’s processed and salty so in my opinion, unhealthy. Now…if I really indulge in a good time, it’s deep dish Chicago pizza for me. I do love food!

You’re also an environmentalist. Can you tell us a little about that?

I do local conservation work in my area and am a strong supporter of the World Wildlife Fund and hope to also work with them one day. I am a BIG advocate of recycling and work to inspire others while finding better ways of conserving and reusing. I also have a molecular (DNA) scientific background which I hope to use working with Dr. Betsy Dresser of the Audubon Society. She is using DNA technology to preserve and maintain endangered wildlife.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I only focus on today while having year-goals for myself. I have no idea what my life will even be like that far up ahead! LOL!

Carmen Shawn FitVibe Interview

fitvibe

Carmen Shawn recently started her clients on a new training method and wanted to share it with us. Read on to find out what she’s working with.

Carmen, you’ve started with a new training technique for your clients called Whole Body Vibration Training, tell us a little bit about it.

I use FITVIBE, which is similar to Powerplate but better! Whole body vibration Training platforms (FITVIBE) enables the user to train various muscles, and trigger other body reactions. The “Fitvide” (WBV) evenly distributes vibrations throughout the body. This accelerates and increases the same muscular contractions and relaxation reflexes you will get from traditional resistance training. So you can get the same benefits in less time.

What got you onto WBV in the first place?

It was introduced to me at my gym, “Miami Beach Fitness”. I took a workshop and got certified on WBV training. I believed in the benefits and what it could do for my clients. I liked the idea of incorporating it into my clients current training programs for variety and to get them to take their workouts to another level.

What are the benefits to Whole Body Vibration Training?

There are many benefits to WBV:

• muscle strength

• improved explosive

• increased ROM, flexibility

• increased Bone density

• improves balance

• increases blood circulation

• cellulite reduction

• accelerates healing and rehab

• improves recovery

Other added benefits are short but efficient workouts and because contractions are involuntary, it recruits unconscious motor units to correct faulty movements.

Are there any drawbacks about WBV? Anything you would improve?

Not many drawbacks at all! You can pretty much train all your muscle groups, do cardiovascular training etc but limits exercise variety. Other then that, if you are a creative trainer and have the correct gym set up, you could go between the “Fitvibe” and traditional training to make a great workout!

Do you use it to workout?

Yes! I try and use it once a week. Mostly for legs. I will sometimes superset between “Fitvibe” and traditional training for a challenge!

What does your WBV workout routine consist of?

An example of what I do: a) Jump squats on Fitvibe supersetting with Bentover cable rows, b) reverse lunge off Fitvibe with pushups. This is just a part of what I do and is very challenging! Idea is to do each set non stop!

What is your favorite body part to train on the Fitvibe?

My favorite body part to train using WBV is my legs! My legs are very strong but also can be my trouble spot. Using Fitvibe helps tighten my legs and reduces cellulite(we all have it ladies!) It also great for bone density which is important to me.

Any problem areas that you have to work on more then others?

My legs and arms are trouble spots for me. WBV training helps stimulate the muscle in these areas. It fires fast twitch fibers to help in muscle development. I do a lot of cardio because I teach Group Fitness classes. Cardio (endurance) activities, mostly recruits slow-twitch. Recruiting both are very important so you need to look at what activities you do mostly and balance it out ( crosstraining). Your best results will come from that.

Where can we get more information on WBV and Fitvibe?

Go to www.fitvibe.com You can also Lana Gelb at Miami Beach Fitness 305-945-7570

You’ve got some stuff in the works. A website and some other ventures, fill us in.

I am currently working on a fitness blog. I am very excited about this! I will be covering gyms, different programs, classes, trainers and what others do to stay in shape in Miami Beach. I am also working on two websites, one for modeling and one for personal training. Will let you know when everything is ready to go!

Zarah Pacheco Interview

1000_large

We caught up with fitness model Zarah Pacheco to find out what she has been doing. A rising star in the industry, Zarah is receiving growing acclaim for her fitness look. With a number of companies and products looking to her to begin representing their products, we thought it would be a good idea to check in with her and see what we could learn.

Zarah, you’re beginning to develop quite a following in the fitness world. Can you tell us what’s on the agenda for the coming months?

Sure thing. I’m thrilled to announce I just received my pro card with Fame WNSO(World Natural Sports Organization) and am going to be competing in my first pro show in Nov’09!

What type of fitness modeling work are you focusing on now? Are you repping any products?

I like to shoot for the magazines, I would like to endorse workout equipment and I’m speaking with a few companies as far as sponsorship.

Fittron recently attended a fitness modeling casting even here in New York. One of the professionals on the site invited us and we spoke with a number of aspiring models and industry veterans. Do you have any advice for them? Can they make a good living as a fitness model?

I never put all my eggs in one basket so to speak…diversify. Get out there and do as many jobs as you can while you can…you never know what doors might open along the way.

Are you still competing?

Yes my Pro show is in 4 weeks.

Are you taking on personal training clients now?

I used to work in a gym as a trainer, now I mostly freelance and consult clients when I can. I love to be able to be a positive influence in someone’s life. Changes for the better of course!

What’s your best feature?

My personality! my eyes, smile, and um…behind.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Sunday?

Church, clean the house, train, relax, yoga, gardening, beach, reading, sometimes work. It all depends on how I feel , and have to do, and sometimes I do them all!

You made a big move when you came down to South Florida from your hometown in Canada. Can you tell us what was going through your head when you decided it was time to leave home?

Well I knew that if I wanted to make it in fitness I had to go where the other like-minded people go and as far as I’m concerned, Florida has a lot of sun and great beach bodies that make the motivation factor high and easy to stick with a great training program year-round.

We also know that you are an avid entrepreneur. Rumor is that you have a supplement line coming out. When’s that going to be done and what else do you have in the works?

Yes, I’m in the beginning phases of the line now. I plan to be done by Spring time. I also work with Premium Ticket sales to events and shows, and credit card processing, starting High-line refinancing in the near future. Oh and I’m finishing up my website- SexyZarah.com.

How many times a week do you work out now?

I work out 6-7 times a week. I take a day off cardio sometimes if my body is really run-down.

Do you have a strict diet? Any cheat foods?

Yes I have a strict diet when I’m competing, other than that I cheat twice a week. I love Tostitos and salsa :)

What’s the best way for fans to get in touch with you?

www.myspace.com/sexyzarah is my fan page and I can be contacted directly through mail…please remember to be patient ;) You can also contact me via my Fittron profile.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

With a great career, lots of love, lots of friends, still loving life and enjoying every last drop!

Danielle Hollenshade Interview

253_large

We recently caught up with Danielle Hollenshade who told us she had retired from competing. Her many fans will no doubt be happy to learn she is doing well and transitioning into a new career. Luckily she is still working as a personal trainer and if you’re in South Florida and looking for a serious fitness professional, you should contact her. Have you been wondering what Danielle has been up to? Read on.

Danielle, what’s new with you? Anything in the works?

Nothing to exciting….I am living a pretty boring life right now. I am back in school working towards my nursing degree and training clients. School has been my new focus so for now my competing days are in retirement. I can say that school is just as demanding and requires so much of my time. I would never be able to go to school, work, and compete….that would be way too much on my plate.

Are you still competing?

I am happily retired since 2007.

Any words of wisdom for anyone out there thinking about getting into the competition circuit?

If you are thinking about competing, I think it’s a great goal. Its very challenging and takes you not only physically but also mentally to a different level. You see that you can achieve more than you ever knew you could. The best advice I can give someone though is to always maintain balance with in every aspect of their life. It’s a very challenging sport and at times demands everything you have. But the most important thing in life is to have fun and enjoy life, so never forget about your friends and family. They will be your biggest support system through your show and for the rest of your life.

If you could change anything about your career, what would it be?

I am very blessed to have accomplished so much. I achieved every goal I set out to achieve…so I would not change a thing. Although now with school…I wish I would have gone to nursing school back when I got my first Bachelors Degree, because it’s a lot harder going back after 10 years.

We heard you were pursuing your nursing degree, how is that going?

Great, I have not started the core program yet. I had to complete all of my science classes this past year before I could start. I am finishing chemistry right now and hope to get into a program no later than next August.

Why did you become a personal trainer?

Working out and being active has always been a part of my life. It was always so much fun for me. In college, my internship was with a corporate fitness center… I loved the ins and outs of running a gym. I used to teach every group class, train clients, and I was the assistant director of a gym. I love working with people one-on-one or in small groups. I love helping people achieve their goals and feel better about themselves. When I moved to Florida I focused only on my personal training business and love what I do every day.

How long have you been training clients?

Since I graduated from college in 2000.

Do you have a particular exercise philosophy that you subscribe to?

I believe in a total, complete healthy lifestyle in all aspects of one’s life – physical, mental, and emotional. Each aspect affects the other and therefore works with each other. When a person is in great physical shape, they feel great, and more effectively handle life and get the most out of each and every day. They feel more confident, look and feel healthier, have more energy, and do more things.

How do you tailor workouts to fit your client’s needs?

Every client that comes to me is different. I look at the client’s current and past health history. I look at what fitness level they are starting from and what their goals are. I also look at their personal lives in terms of work and family responsibilities. This is a big factor in terms of the time they have to commit to working out and making it a lifestyle change. Based on that I tailor their workout program and nutrition program to reach their goals.

How long should people work out for?

Weight training 2-5 times a week, cardio 3-6 times per week 30-60 minutes. But everyone is so different so this will vary based on current fitness level and goals.

Do you have any suggestions on how someone can get started on an exercise regime?

I think the best way is to join a local gym. This way you are around people that are physically fit, who also make fitness a part of their lives. This helps people getting started since support can be a great motivation. Getting a personal trainer is always the best way to go. This way, they can help you develop a plan that is best for you to achieve your goals. Since money can be an issue, look into just getting a few sessions with a trainer (5-10) to get you started and feeling confident. I don’t believe that 1, 2 or even 3 sessions is enough to get new people comfortable to train safely and effectively on their own.

What type of cardio is best? And how much cardio should someone do a day?

I believe the best type of cardio is the cardio you enjoy doing the best. If its not fun your not going to do it or stick with it. For me, running outside on the beach is the best. It clears my head and I love being outside. Plus I sweat so much more and the high intensity is better for me. But everyone is different…some people need a 1 hour a day of cardio, others need 30 minutes 3 times a week. It truly depends on your goals and where you are starting from. I don’t believe there are any rules set in stone.

Do you have any interests outside of the fitness industry?

I’m a very low key person. After years of going 100 miles per hour, I know love to relax more than anything. I love going to the beach, reading, going to the movies, going out for sushi, and just hanging out with family and friends.

Where will you be in 20 years?

Hopefully happily married with a family, but you never know what turns life has for you…20 years seems like forever away…I don’t know where I will be in 5 years….I’ll let you know when I get there.

Carmen Shawn Interview

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

l_4b20749dc6614191aad908c2280975e6

Continuing our Fittron.com fitness professional interview series, we spoke with Carmen Shawn a personal trainer and fitness model in Miami. She told us a little about her training philosophy and even clued us into her new website. Check it out.

Why did you become a personal trainer?

Started working out when I was 18 and fell in love with fitness! And everything went from there!

How long have you been training clients?

16 years.

Do you have a particular exercise philosophy that you subscribe to?

I approach each client different but for the most part I believe in Circuit training, short rest periods and doing exercises that involve core. But some clients I will train a lot differently depending on their goals.

How do you tailor workouts to fit your client’s needs?

I do what is best for a client. So I would say it is to put together a fitness routine that is best suited to an individual. Focusing on their goals, needs and abilities.

How long should people work out for?

I believe in short, efficient workouts and dividing your workouts up. Doing cardio separate from their resistance training at least 5 to 6 hours later if they can.

Do you have any suggestions on how someone can get started on an exercise regime?

Hardest thing is to get started. Once you get a routine going and start to see results, you will keep going. I always suggest working with a fitness professional 2 -3 x a week to help educate, motivate and get you on the right track!

Should men and women workout differently?

Men are from mars and women are from Venus! Need I say more! You can train similarly but that really depends on their goals. Women have different needs then men and recover different.

What type of cardio is best? And how much cardio should someone do a day?

I believe no more then 45mins. Cardio is meant to be done aerobically to burn calories and fat. Once you start feeling tired and out of breath, it is time to stop. Mix up your cardio to prevent overuse and injury. But also to keep the body guessing and to add variety to your workout.

Do you have any interests outside of the fitness industry?

Modeling. www.carmenshawn.com

Where will you be in 20 years?

Still in the gym!

Gina Aliotti Interview

Monday, August 17th, 2009

gina01Gina Aliotti is one of the most recognized names in the Fitness industry. Winner of the 2008 Arnold Classic, and widely acknowledged as the “fittest” woman in the country, Gina’s credentials speak for themselves. An active entrepreneur with several new businesses launched, Gina gave us some of her valuable time to answer a few questions. Enjoy.

Why did you become a personal trainer?

I started personal training during my college years. I started training out of the small gym associated with the residential complex where I lived. I was the “neighborhood trainer. I had to be creative with my training techniques as the space and equipment was limited. It was a great place for me to get started because I not only had the gym to myself but was able to learn how to modify and crate ways to hit certain body parts. Throughout this process I created my very own style of functional and creative training that I use today. I learned how to get the best workouts and amazing results without using a ton of industrial equipment. This foundation of starting from the basics enabled me to teach my clients that limited access to equipment and machines is no excuse!

How long have you been training clients?

8 years.

Do you have a particular exercise philosophy that you subscribe to?

I believe that more is not always better. I am a firm believer in getting in and getting out. I am very realistic with my clients. I understand that people’s time is limited and show my clients that you can get the most efficient and productive workouts in a short amount of time. I do not believe that you need to spend hours in the gym to obtain the results you want. Trainer smarter and not harder and longer is the key in my book. My training philosophy is geared towards proper form, posture, min muscle connection and proper contracting for optimal results.

How do you tailor workouts to fit your client’s needs?

Every individual is different and tailoring each workout to their needs is essential. Depending on their fitness goals, every workout program is different. If a person is trying to gain muscle or is trying to tone and sculpt, there are different approaches that I take. I get to know my clients on a personal level to allow my workout programs to go hand and hand with their current life. It is all about making lifestyle changes so the more I can allow my programs, both training and nutrition, to fit in there their lives at ease the better. Showing my clients how to maintain a healthy lifestyle is my main goal and focus.

How long should people work out for?

Forever!! Incorporating working out into your daily life is the key to success. For initial results, I always suggest giving yourself 6-8 week and from there the sky is the limit! Once you start seeing results you are forever hooked and it becomes you way of life! Working out is for life!

Do you have any suggestions on how someone can get started on an exercise regime?

It all starts today! Start by walking on your lunch break or after work. Then incorporate some resistance training. Take baby steps and little by little start adding exercises and time to your workouts. If you need that extra motivation and expertise, seek a fitness professional to help you with your goals. You have to start somewhere so make today the day you start! Take a 5 minute walk and before you know it you will be taking long and enjoyable hour long walks.

Should men and women workout differently?

Absolutely. Men and women have a very different genetic make-up and should know their strengths and weaknesses. Of course the basics as far as incorporating weight training and cardiovascular program are the same but how you perform you weight baring exercises and the types of exercises you perform are bases on you personal goals and desire. Again, for better assistance, please seek advice from a fitness professional to help you with your goals.

What type of cardio is best? And how much cardio should someone do a day?

This is hard to answer because, again, it depends on one’s personal goals but ideally 4-6 days of cardio for 30-45 minutes is ideal. I recommend changing up cardio from high intensity to low intensity. I do not believe in doing the same amount of cardio for the same amount of time everyday. I am all about change and believe you should constantly keep your body guessing~ Change is good. Slower, less intense, longer session cardio has its advantages as well as shorter, anaerobic cardio. It all depends on what you’re trying to achieve and what your fitness goals are.

Generally, how long should someone workout for?

As I mentioned earlier, I do not believe that a weight training session should last longer then 1 hour. I think you should be able to get in and out of the gym in 45-50 minutes, not including cardio.

Do you have any interests outside of the fitness industry?

Absolutely! I love to travel, cook and learn. I love reading and writing. I am big into personal growth and constantly enjoy allowing myself to grow!

Where will you be in 20 years?

20 years… I plan to always be involved in the fitness industry, helping people learn how to make fitness a lifestyle. I plan on owning my own fitness facility where people can come learn, laugh, workout, hang out, and just have a good time! Fitness is a lifestyle. I want to continue showing people how manageable and balance fitness living can be. Balance is the key and that is the focus of my training. Life is too good to pass by without enjoying it. I want to teach people how to be fit, eat and live healthy but still enjoy all that life has to offer! I will have a family of my own and I can’t wait to teach my children the ins and outs of healthy living at an early age.

Do you have any other fitness ventures?

Yes! My finance and I are owners of M And G Fitness, Inc, where I continue to help individuals with their personal fitness goals. I have a limited amount of clients at one time so I am able to focus my attention to each and everyone and give them the specific attention they need! My main focus is teaching individuals how to live a very balance lifestyle! I believe fitness is a way of life and not a short term program! Kavvy Sonhos Interview

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

723_large

Kavvy, you’re involved in several new projects, can you tell us a little about them?

Greg, I’m so excited where my career is taking me, many things I have been working hard on are all starting to materialize.

My ultimate career goal all along has been to merge the fitness world with the fashion world together. No one has ever been able to accomplish this before. Being a runway model for 12 years and earning national recognition as a fitness competitor, I am confident I’m the most qualified woman to be this pioneer. So confident in fact, I relocated to the Miami South Beach area to be at the doorstep of the modeling industry. I have been welcomed back to the industry with open arms. The modeling opportunities have been endless and the feedback I am receiving has been overwhelming positive. Fitness and fashion, is a match made in heaven I think. I have grand plans Greg, and I’m getting closer to achieving this goal every day.

On a more personal note, all my life, all I ever wanted to do was to help people, be it physically, emotionally or spiritually. Finally at this stage in my life and career I am in the position to do so. I firmly believe that experience is the greatest teacher of all and believe you me I have plenty of life experience I can use to help people of all walks of life. For the past few years I have concentrated my efforts in Florida. Now I am ready to branch out on a wider basis. Through a new website I am launching in September (www.kavvyworld.com) I will be able to reach people everywhere.

Can you tell us a little bit more about kavvyworld.com?

Of course. Like I said it will be launching in September. My staff and I are putting the finishing touches on the site as we speak. It will be a place anyone come to for all kinds of help. Of course it will be fitness and fashion based, but will encompass so much more than just that. I will have generic information about nutritional programs, supplements, workout programs, spiritual programs, a crisis hotline, a blog etc. I will also have merchandise available for sale such as my calendars, my posters, autographed photos, DVDs, apparel, recipes, cookbooks, etc. A good portion of the site will be free of charge and another portion will for subscribers who want VIP access to all of me…all of my sexy my photos, specific tailored nuturition, supplement and workout programs. I need to mention that any money I earn off of the site, a portion of it will be donated to various charities of my choosing.

A crisis hot-line, how will that work exactly? Who will be fielding the calls?

We are still working out the final details. But I want men and women who feel trapped in life, feel there is no way out of whatever situation they are in, that there is a safe and discreet place they can call to have people listen or offer simple solutions. When I was trapped in an horrific situations in my life be it during my childhood in Brazil or later on in unhealthy relationships, I wish I had a place to go to, a support network of sorts.

Can you tell us about your childhood in Brazil and how it has led you to this cause?

Brazil is one of the worst places in the world for an underprivileged child to grow up. Not so poverty wise, but for children of the streets, which I was one of. I was abandoned and orphaned as an infant. I never knew my birth parents and went from one orphanage to another. I don’t need to tell you every awful detail of what went on in those places, but let’s just say I emerged from there a survivor. I ended up on the streets and did whatever I had to do to survive. I saw one of my closest friends murdered in front of my own two eyes. I held another in my arms as she took her last breath. I am going into much more detail about my life and everyone will be able to read it all in my life story I am working on with a writer. That is another thing VIP subscribers will have access to…I will be posting sneak previews of sections of the book for their eyes only. I want to help the children of the streets in San Paulo. A portion of all the money I earn will be donated to them as well as a few other charities who causes are near and dear to my heart, be it sexually exploited children, the illegal sex trade, etc.

How can someone get involved to support all your charitable work?

We will have links set up on the website that they can click directly to each charity. If a website is not available for them we will furnish anyone interested with the name and address of each.

What’s the best way for fans to communicate with you?

The best way would be through email. Kavvy@kavvyworld.com or through my toll-free number 877-KAVVY4U. I have a very very busy schedule but either myself or one of my dedicated staff will be sure to get back to you as quickly as possible.

Why did you become a personal trainer?

I have always been interested in fitness/exercise and helping people. For me it was a match made in heaven. It was a natural progression for me. I believe in being a power of example. The more and more I advanced in the fitness world, the more people started to notice me and ask me nutrition and workout questions. People were always asking to join me on a workout or give them a pointer or two. One thing led to another and I decided to get certified and started helping clients achieve their fitness goals. What a better life than to do what you love and get paid for it. For me it wasn’t the money, for me it was watching someone make positive change in their life and achieve their fitness goals.

How long have you been training clients?

It’s been over seven years now and I have loved every minute of it. I get such satisfaction helping others, I really do.

Are you still competing?

As far as I am concerned right now, yes. I still train everyday as if I am competing. It is just so hard to say right now one way or the other because of my hectic modeling schedule. But I still train and diet as if the Nationals are right around the corner. I always like keep my body 2 to 3 weeks out for a completion.

Do you have a particular exercise philosophy that you subscribe to?

Stay dedicated, do something every day. I try to set small attainable goals I can do on a daily basis, instead of trying to crash and burn at the last minute. That is why I always strive to keep myself in peak physical condition year round. I also like to make it fun and challenging so that I’m looking forward to going into that gym sometimes 3 times a day. Having a workout partner helps keep you motivated to.

How do you tailor workouts to fit your client’s needs?

I sit down and take a complete history on the person, find out what makes them tick, find out what their goals are. My main focus is to listen to what their personal needs and goals are. Not what I think is best for them. What I want out of my body and personal goals is probably not what they want for themselves.

How long should people work out for?

I recommend a balanced but challenging training session on whatever fitness level you are at. You want to keep your workouts brief so you keep the intensity up. I recommend for weight gain or weight loss around 45 minutes of intense training. Once again, I am focused when I train, I do not take time to socialize or fix my hair… lol….

Do you have any suggestions on how someone can get started on an exercise regime?

Well, be realistic of your potential and your limits. If one is a beginner, then 30 minutes of some cardio will be a lot for the first couple weeks. If you have trained before and getting back in it then usually a cardio and weight training routine is beneficial. Just be CONSISTENT and do not give up! The first couple weeks are the hardest. You will be out of breath, sore and sometimes wanting to give up… On those days, just do something and usually when you just arrive to the gym, some motivation finds you:)

Should men and women workout differently?

I do not like to base a workout program based on gender. It is about what the person’s goal is and their fitness level. Like I said we need to first find out what their fitness goals are and go from there. There is the very good chance that yes they will train the same, but if the man is training for the NFL and the woman is training for a marathon, then no. It really all depends on each individual circumstance. Some might want muscle on, some might want to sculpt etc.

What type of cardio is best? And how much cardio should someone do a day?

Anything that is fun for you! Of course cardio is not the most exciting hobby to have… so, especially in the beginning, do not force yourself on a machine that you are dreading to do all day. Once one has a higher intensity or specific fitness goal, then I base cardio on those particular goals. I also encourage everyone to enjoy nature! Try doing cardio outside. You can be very creative and it is not like you are in a prison at the gym to reach your goals! Remember, raising your heart rate is the key… and finding something that you will continue doing is the other key to unlocking your goals! As far as how much per day, once again, this is completely based on the person’s fitness goals. On that note, most of my clients do cardio for weight loss purposes. If that is the case, I recommend doing 30- 45 minutes FIRST thing in the morning on an empty stomach! It really is the secret to losing fat!

Generally, how long should someone workout for?

I think working out should be a lifestyle. I think they should do some form of physical activity for the rest of their lives. It will keep them healthy inside and out.

Do you have any interests outside of the fitness industry?

I have many interests. I love to challenge myself in every aspect of my life.. I believe that I truly feel balanced and most happy when I am emotionally, spritually and physically in shape:) I am also involved in helping our environment and trying to heal our earth that we have mis-treated for many generations!

Where will you be in 20 years?

I want to be a role model. Especially for young women! I have overcome many obstacles in my life and feel that I can be beneficial to listening and guiding people. I have a huge heart and giving to others is truly what makes me so very happy! I also want to focus on our future.. which would be our children! They are the future for us and so it is important to teach and show them what a disciplined and healthy woman really is!

Interval Training with Danielle Hollenshade

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Interval training is great for anyone no matter what their fitness level. Interval training is varying an exercise routine to include short periods of increased intensity. Elite athletes first used interval training to improve their speed and performance in sports. But anyone can use it to shock their bodies into a change for the better.

WHY INTERVAL TRAIN?

You don’t have to be involved in sports to interval train. Interval training offers many benefits to your health like improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing speed and burning more calories. Interval training is dynamic because it can be used in many types of activities and in many environments. You can use interval training in swimming, walking, running and in weight training and you can do it at home or at the gym.

PLAIN OLD CARDIO:

People have long been advised to work out for long periods of time with low-intensity activity to burn calories from fat. Therefore, many people work out at the same intensity level for the duration of their exercise. But we now know that interval training can help you increase your metabolism, burn calories from fat and carbohydrates and keep burning calories long after you finish working out. For people on diets hoping for some weight loss, interval training is a great way to make the most of your time at the gym.

GETTING TO IT:

There are two types of interval training, one for people at the beginner and intermediate level and one for more advanced athletes. Health experts recommend those people just starting interval training should use the beginner level. The beginner level means that you would work out at a greater intensity for 2-5 minutes and then go back to a comfortable stage for 2-5 minutes.

INTENSITY:
You need to monitor your heart rate in order to calculate your intensity levels. Your lower intensity level would be around 50-65% of your target heart rate while the higher intensity would be just below 85% of your target heart rate. If you find monitoring your heart rate too difficult you can use the rating of perceived exertion scale. This is a scale from 1 to 10 with 0 being no exertion and 10 being the most exertion you can handle.

EVERYONE CAN DO IT!

Almost everyone can incorporate interval training into their fitness routines. Those people who are over the age of 40 or have chronic health conditions should consult their doctor before they begin a new fitness regimen. Since you control the variables of the intensity, speed and duration, interval training can be adapted to walking or hiking in the woods to swimming laps or jogging on a treadmill.
For example, if you were walking, you could increase your intensity for 30 seconds and then resume your normal walking pace for a minute. The next time, you could increase the intensity for two minutes before resuming your normal walking pace.

THE EFFECT ON YOUR BODY:

You may have found that, after weight training or aerobic activity, you have pain or tingling sensations in your muscles. The pain is from the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles. Because interval training alternate high intensity and low intensity exercise, your muscles are better able to adapt and you will not have as much pain.

ADVANTAGES OF INTERVAL TRAINING:

 Burn calories more efficiently

 Increase metabolism

 Improve speed and endurance

 Enhance cardiovascular fitness

 Keeps your workout exciting

 Prevent injury

RISKS OF INTERVAL TRAINING:

 Potential for over-training

 Potential for injury

If you would like to try interval training and belong to a gym, you can set up a session with one of the personal trainers. If you workout at home or on your own, then look for ways to vary the intensity of your workout.

Danielle Hollenshade know all about interval training and much more. She’s a Fittron professional who can take your fitness level to places you never thought possible. This article is only a small taste of her knowledge. Contact Danielle and let her help you achieve the fitness level you’ve always wanted.
