Don't be another gym horror story…

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

As a college student set to graduate next month, I can tell you all about the “Freshmen 15″ (or worse) and the health horrors you encounter over the course of college. With the never-ending piles of fried food in the dining hall and steady flow of beer on the weekends, paired with a full schedule that doesn’t leave much down time- and really, who wants to spend it at the gym? – it’s easy to let a few pounds creep on.

Senior year hit and I realized it was time to shape up my life, including my body. Who wants to hit adulthood with a gut? You face the fact you’re going to go home after college and see high school friends, and you don’t want to be the one they whisper about, “Wow she really gained weight…” After a trip down memory lane and a glance through a photo album from prom, I knew it was time to hit the gym.

So, I joined a local gym, or “health club” if you want to get technical. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a total slob, I was a semi-regular at my college’s gym. The fact I’m now paying to belong to a gym is extra motivation, and knowing I can work out unbothered by frat guys and “meatheads” is worth it. I’ve always hated running, like run a quarter mile and convince myself I pulled a muscle and jump on the elliptical kind of hatred. But, I was making big changes, and decided to make running my goal.

It’s been a few months, and would you believe it I’m up to running about five miles a day. I love the new muscles in my legs, but not as much as I love knowing I could probably outrun someone if I were followed or in danger. It’s also great knowing that I’m improving my cardiovascular health, as heart disease runs in my family. This sudden empowerment motivated me to do more, and get a personal trainer.

My gym offers a free personal training session a month included in my membership fees, so I saw the front desk and set up an appointment based around my availability. They told me, “ok you have an appointment with Ted next Tuesday at 10.” I didn’t know what else to ask so just showed up for my appointment the following week. What a mistake. I didn’t know anything about the trainer, and he didn’t know anything about me. Not only that, when I went for my appointment they told me they had to switch, and I didn’t have Ted, I now had Kyle. Kyle was apparently confused, and kept calling me the wrong name. He didn’t ask me what I wanted to target, instead we rushed into an upper body work out. Maybe he had spoken to the other girl who’s name he kept calling me, because he referred to a phone call we had- only I had never spoken to him. He went on to tell me about his family, his girlfriend, his kids, asked me how old I was and commented that he was almost twice as old as I was. He told me I had a nice smile and if I were his daughter he wouldn’t let me out of the house. He briefly told me about the exercises I was doing. He DIDN’T ask me about my health history, my normal routine, or what my goals were. I felt like because one set was “easy” for me, he would quadruple the weight and my arms turned to jello. I’ve worked with a trainer before, and he always said he wanted to challenge me and not kill me, so I would feel it but still want to keep training. I didn’t get that feeling from this guy, at all. I wanted him to give me advice on what to target, show me a routine that I could do on my own, and not talk about his kids. I didn’t know what I was getting into.

If I had used Fittron, I wouldn’t have encountered any of those problems. With Fittron I could have searched for a personal trainer in my area, and saw their pictures, bio, certifications, and referrals. I could have spoken to them before the session so my goals would be clear and I would know who they were. I could have read articles they posted on Fittron’s Pro Page, and I could have been confident that they are serious professionals who know what they’re doing. I don’t have tons of money to throw around, I am a poor college student after all- so I could’ve posted on Fittron’s solicitation board stating, “Young adult seeking PT for fitness advice in Central NJ. Will pay 60 for session.” The professionals could’ve came to me. That’s a lot of “could haves,” and instead I ended up disappointed and unable to lift my arms to shampoo my hair for a week. To top it off, using Fittron is FREE. So let’s add dumb to the the list of disappointed and in pain.

Don’t end up the next the next fitness horror story like me. Take advantage of all the great features Fittron has to offer. You have nothing to lose and a great body and trainer to gain.

Simple Tips To Shed Fat

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

TIPS TO GETTING THE FAT OFF!

1: No fast food. To combat the urges, I eat every 2-3 hours.

2: Eat the majority of meals at home. When I stopped eating out, I started losing fat.

3: Eat more vegetables. If I get hungry between meals, I either grab a plate of raw veggies with fat-free dressing or have a protein shake if I need the protein or want a special treat.

4: Cook fat-free (cooking sprays or fat-free spray butter).

5: Reduced calorie condiments. My new favorite is I cant believe its not butter spray. It has all of the taste of butter, with only five calories per serving. Also, the new syrup made with Splenda is excellent on sweet potatoes.

6: Drink loads of water and stick to diet drinks (Diet Mountain Dew is my favorite). No fruit juices, only real fruit. The exception is protein shakes.

I Want to Work with a Fitness Professional Who’s Not in My Area

Monday, January 21st, 2008

If you’re a regular visitor to our site you’ve come to realize that we have a bevy of qualified fitness professionals in a number of different states. Maybe you clicked on Jean Jitomir’s profile and saw that she was a Cornell undergrad now studying for her PHD in nutrition at Baylor. You probably said “Wow. Now there’s a qualified professional that I could work with.” But maybe you’re in New Jersey and don’t think you’ll be moving to Waco, Texas anytime soon. That’s ok. Contact Jean anyway. We live in a world without barriers and the internet has, as Thomas Friedman so affectionately put it, made our world “flat.”

With the advent of the internet no one is that far away. Jean can write a nutritional program for you and send it to you each day via email. Additionally, many of our professionals are available for phone consultations and email and online services. Online training is become quite popular and many people are finding they can easily obtain the help of qualified professionals who are not in their immediate area.

All of our professionals have a “contact” tab in their profiles. This displays either their phone number or email. Since it doesn’t cost you anything to contact one of our professionals, why not write them an email and explain your situation. Inform the professional that you are not located near them, but wanted to inquire to see if they had any services that they could offer remotely. You might be presently surprised at the response that you receive.

You won’t find a more qualified nutritionist and health coach then Jean Jitomir. Jean is an Ivy League graduate, registered dietician, and PHD student who practices what she preaches. Competing in, and winning, numerous fitness figure shows throughout the nation, Jean’s resume is truly spectacular.

Jean Jitomir

Maybe you don’t live in Texas. But you’ve got a computer because you found Jean on Fittron, so why not contact her and see if she can set something up. What do you have to lose? It doesn’t cost you anything to search our directory and contact someone. And while you’re at it, browse our other professionals and see if they can offer similar “remote” services. I’m sure you’ll find that they will.

Why You Should Start to Live a Healthier Lifestyle

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Nearly two-thirds or 130 million adults in the United States are overweight, and nearly one-third, or 61 million, is obese. Approximately 15% of children and adolescents are overweight. An estimated 70% of overweight individuals face a greater risk of diabetes and related illnesses. Exercise helps to control type 2 diabetes by decreasing insulin resistance and burning excess glucose. Studies have shown that a healthy diet and regular exercise regiment are essential steps to not only lose weight, but also to reduce stress and lower cholesterol.

Today, there are 39.4 million health club members in the United States. Despite that seemingly high number, nearly 90% of the United States has yet to join a gym. In efforts to thwart this ongoing health epidemic, the Government has undertaken various initiatives to encourage Americans to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle. But combating this health crisis is no small task and often those who have never exercised before are often unsure of where to begin.

Most people are not familiar with the locations of gym and health facilities in their neighborhood or the cost and services of local fitness professionals. Fearful of hurting themselves or losing interest too quickly, millions of Americans look to enlist the help of fitness professionals to direct them on the path to a healthier lifestyle.

Corporate Wellness Conferences

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Fittron has been asked to present at the Unilever Corporate Wellness conference in Englewood Cliffs, NJ on Oct. 25th. Unilever is a conglomerate of many different companies and own, among many others, Slim Fast and Sunsilk brands. We are extremely excited to be given the opportunity to present the merits of our website to the Unilever employees of Englewood Cliffs, NJ.

This is a terrific opportunity to market the site. Unilever sponsors this conference for their employees to showcase the importance of healthy living. Presenters will include various fitness professionals, healthy food and beverage companies, fitness product lines, and other players operating in the health and wellness space. We will have a standard booth and people will walk around the convention to learn about the different products and services being offered.

To prepare for this conference we ordered 6,000 Fittron postcards and contracted out a fantastic designer to create them. He did a great job, and we’re looking forward to distributing them at the convention and beyond. We had previously been handing out flyers, and although they serve their purpose, they are rather cumbersome and big. Post cards are much smaller and catchier. The professional image and prints that we have created are sure to catch some eyes.

We also created a Fittron banner which will be hanging behind our booth. The design is consistent with the postcards and should really standout at the convention. The colors are striking, the picture is captivating, and the text is enticing. I think we’re going to get a lot of visitors.

I had to rush (and pay an insane amount) to get my postcards here for next Thursday. Oh well. You need to spend money to make money and I think the postcards are a terrific marketing tool. The banner is being printed by Staples and should be ready by tomorrow. I also have them printing a complimentary personal training ticket that we have arranged with one of the professionals on Fittron. Fuel Gym is also throwing in some free group classes and a one day free pass. The only “cost” for attending the conference is to bring a basket of goods to be auctioned off. We have decided upon the free passes that I just mentioned, and some nutritional products.

The importance of attending conferences like this cannot be understated. We have the opportunity to market our product to thousandths of interested employees. They clearly fall within our “target audience” as they are attending the convention to discover new products in the health and wellness industry. I am also signed up for two more conventions in the month of November at various corporations throughout New York City. These conventions, much like the one in Englewood Cliffs, are company sponsored, and should be a great opportunity to network. I am also curious to see what other companies and professionals will be attending the show. There might be a great opportunity to network with other fitness professionals who might be interested in promoting their services on the site. We’re definitely looking forward to the conference and it should be a great success. We’ll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.
